Scallop ceviche, oysters Rockefeller and creamy New England clam chowder were just a few of the delectable dishes offered to the hundreds of people who descended on Greenport Village on Saturday, Dec. 6 to sample the briny bounty of our waters for the third annual Shellabration festival.

Despite the rain, a spot at the bar at restaurants like Scrimshaw and The Frisky Oyster was in high demand for the two-day festival, which raises money for CAST and the Southold Project in Aquaculture Training, a Cornell Cooperative Extension program that encourages locals to grow shellfish.

Restaurants pair with local wineries to offer $5 tasting platters of local shellfish and $3 tastes of wine.

“If you are Long Island born and raised, you basically have to like shellfish,” said Tyler Ocon, a Wading River native who hoped a train from Astoria to Ronkonkoma to attend the festival. “I spent years in western New York where you can’t get fresh seafood ever, so this is really cool.”

The festival continues from noon to 4 p.m. tomorrow, Dec. 7. Wristbands are $15 and can be purchased at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. on Carpenter St. or at the Little Creek Market on Bootleg Alley.

Also included in the deal is a glass of Harbor Ale from Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. and a sampler platter of clams and oysters from SPAT.
