Layering your clothes is a must as the temperatures drops. The problem is piling on shirts, jackets and scarfs can leave you with an unintended bulky look. Designer Morgan Gildersleeve, of RENEE’S in Mattituck, has some tips for layering your clothes to keep you warm yet stay stylish this season.

“It is easier than people think to layer without looking bulky,” she said. “I think that some people think when they put on a winter coat they are going to look huge, but that doesn’t have to always be the case if you have the right balance.”

Mind your materials

Choosing clothes made of the right materials can minimize the look of multiple layers without sacrificing warmth, Gildersleeve said.

Cashmere, for example, is a great option because it keeps you warm but is also very thin and soft, she said.

“It’s a great layering piece because it doesn’t add much bulk,” she said. “Also, cashmere scarves and hats are great too for the same reasons.”

While often overlooked, silk garments are also a good choice when layering, she added.

“People don’t realize that silk is one of the most tightly woven fabrics, therefore it doesn’t let cold air through,” she said. “So wearing silk as your first layer, close to the body, keeps you warm and chic.”

Fitted bottom layers

What you don’t see counts just as much as what you do see, said Gildersleeve.

“Wearing a legging under a pant keeps you warm whether you are wearing jeans or a wide leg pant,” she said. “It is adds an invisible layer of warmth.”

Gildersleeve recommends Lyse’s leggings because they also have built-in waist control to keep everything tucked in, but are still comfy.

Balance your proportions

Being aware of balancing the top and bottom of your outfit is an important part of layering correctly, Gildersleeve said.

“If you are going to be a little more bulky on top as far as your jacket, it is important to pair it with a fitted bottom,” she said. “If you’re wearing a big coat with a lot of layers underneath, pair it with a slim fit pant or skirt on the bottom.”

Adding a belt is also one way to enhance your look while defining your waist and giving you the shape you want, she said.

All of the above items can be found at RENEE’S. The best brands for these looks would be Elan, Barbour, Monoreno, and Curio Knits, Gildersleeve said.

RENEE’S is located at Mattituck Plaza, 10095 Main Rd in Mattituck.
