Travel guidebook Frommer’s has clued its readers into a secret that is obvious to anyone who has ever traveled around New York — Greenport Village is one of the state’s most charming towns.
“This is the cutest town on Long Island’s North Fork. Filled with Colonial buildings, inns, homes, and shops, the town sits right on the protected waters of Peconic Bay,” Frommer’s states in a story published on its website. “There’s a strong sense of the town’s history as a fishing village, with the smell of salt in the air, but there are also nice galleries and restaurants that line Main Street.”
The North Fork’s only incorporated village was in good company. Cold Spring, Aurora, Saranac Lake, Skaneateles and Cooperstown, the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, all made the cut.
Greenport and neighboring Southold were also selected as two of the five best places to go antiquing in the state.
“While it may play second fiddle to neighboring Greenport, just-as-cute-but-quieter Southold is a great place to browse antiques with less company,” Frommer’s said. “There are a number of treasure-filled shops, including an antique doll hospital.”
The North Fork even beat out the posher fork to the south, earning itself a spot on one of the best places to get out on the water.
Frommer’s also noted the acclaimed North Fork Table & Inn, selecting it as one of the state’s best dining bets.
Not to be outdone by the North Fork, Shelter Island was selected as one of the best family vacations and The Rock’s Mashomack Preserve was named one of the best hiking spots and best outdoor pursuits.
But the regional accolades weren’t all for the East End’s beautiful beaches, destination dining scene and charming towns.
The Big Duck in nearby Flanders was listed as one of New York’s most unusual experiences.
