Avo Mexican Grill’s chicken burrito bowl. (Cyndi Murray photo)

Even before Avo Mexican Grill opened in Wading River earlier this month, we at northforker.com had been dying to check out the eatery’s delicious fusion of local and international flavors.

And it didn’t disappoint.

Avo has everything you could ask for in a great Mexican menu, including staples like tacos, quesadillas, burritos and nachos. But it’s the restaurant’s ingredients that really take the meal to the next level. The dishes incorporate fresh, seasonal vegetables from Andrew’s Family Farm in Wading River and high-quality meats like pulled pork with pineapple and braised organic chicken.

In this week’s edition of “What’s for Lunch” we opted for Avo’s chicken burrito in a bowl, or as the menu describes, “all the goodness of a burrito without the wrap.”

The bowl comes with whole wheat or white rice, beans, queso fresco, pico de gallo and, in my case, melt-in-your-mouth chicken. Served with a side of tortilla chips and salsa, it is a healthy lunch that won’t leave you hungry.

You can swap out the chicken for a vegterian-style, beef, steak or pork burrito bowl.

Avo Mexican Grill, located on Route 25A in Wading River, is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

What’s for a lunch is a weekly northforker.com column highlighting delicious mid-day meals on the North Fork. Suggestions can be sent to [email protected].
