Ellis House Bed & Breakfast in Southold (Cyndi Murray photos)

As historic as it is charming, Ellis House Bed & Breakfast in Southold is the perfect getaway for wine enthusiasts.

Located on Main Road, the inn is a short distance away from dozens of vineyards and a brewery; not to mention antique stores and farm stands.

It was 12 years ago when innkeepers Scott and Connie Ellis purchased and restored the 1850s Southold property and opened to the public for the first time as a bed and breakfast.

“When we travelled we always loved staying at B&Bs,” Ms. Ellis said. “This was the perfect fit for us.”

The pre-civil war home has been updated with modern amenities, but retains much of its original charm. The wide pine floors, black walnut and oak parquet entryway and handcrafted plaster moldings with 10-foot ceilings  are original to the home.

All of the inn’s four bedrooms are spacious and have attached private bathrooms and views of adjacent vineyards and fields.

The bedrooms are also equipped with air conditioning, electric fireplaces, premium queen-sized pillow top posture pedic mattresses, down comforters, premium linens and pillows, an iron and ironing board, hair dyers, mp3 plays and free wireless internet.

There is also a mini fridge in each room stocked with water.

The Ellis’ love cooking together and you’ll definitely be able to tell by their three-course breakfast.

Some menu favorites, made mostly with local ingredients, include creme Brulee French toast with raspberry sauce, stuffed omelette crepes, banana walnut pancakes and crisp salmon potato pancakes.  Eggs “your way” are always available.

The Ellis’ are also accommodating to people with food allergies.

Ellis House prides itself on providing full concierge services that include arranging restaurant reservations to providing winery recommendations based on guests’ wants.

“I go out of my way to find out what people want to do and help tailor their visits,” Ms. Ellis said.

In addition to being in walking distance to the beach, a handful of award-winning wineries and Greenport Harbor Brewing Company’s new brewery, the house is a quiet place to relax as well.

The inn’s large outdoor patio has plenty of sitting to kick back and enjoy the sunset over the vineyards, a glass of your favorite local wine, a good book or coffee in the fresh morning air.

Beach passes are also provided free of charge along with beach towels, chairs and umbrellas.
