While summer is on its way out — the fall apple-picking season is just ripening up — kicking off with a festival Harbes Farm and Orchard in Riverhead.

The now five-year-old orchard uses an innovative trellis system allowing its apple trees to grow within reach for even the tiniest of harvesters.

Kids and adults alike can pick from eight different varieties of apples growing on the five-acre farm.

Once families have picked their share, there’s ample opportunity for fall fun including pony and hay rides, a corn maze, candied apples and apple-themed contests for the young and wine tasting and live music for adults.

Local vendors will also have handmade candles and other souvenirs on display.

The orchard is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $8 per person and includes a bag to fill approximately 3 to 4 pounds of apples.

The orchard is located at 5698 Sound Avenue in Riverhead. For more information call (631) 298-0800.
