Harbor Knoll Bed & Breakfast in Greenport. (Cyndi Murray photo)

A stay at Harbor Knoll  Inn in Greenport is like taking a trip to the summer home of a family member or friend. That may be due to the fact that the 1870s harborfront property was innkeeper’s Leueen Miller’s summer home for more than 3 decades before she decided to turn it in to a B&B.

“I retired and we just decided to turn it into a bed and breakfast for a few years,” Miller said. “Ten years later, we are still doing it.”

The historic home was first built as a summer abode for a family from Georgia. Later, the niece of General Custer – who eventually established the Custer Institute in nearby Southold — purchased the home.

Today the three bedroom home and adjacent cottage has all the amenities needed for a relaxing break but is within a quick walk to downtown Greenport.

Have your choice of one of Harbor Knoll’s three in-house bedrooms or choose to stay at the inn’s separate “enchanted cottage.”

All the rooms feature television, air conditioning, private bathroom, free Wi-Fi. A tote bag with bottled water and a snack is delivered daily.

For a more romantic and private atmosphere, book the cottage, Miller said.  The cottage features high ceilings, a fireplace, a convertible queen-size sofa, large HD LCD TV, free Wi-Fi and air conditioning. The kitchen is also fully equipped with a washer/dryer for clothes. The cottage can fit up to four guests.

Whether you want to relax at the inn or hit the town, Harbor Knoll will fit your needs.

“One of the nice things about this house is there are a lot of social areas. People can relax outside or find a corner of their own inside. Plus, you’re just far enough away from the noise of the village, but in close walking distance.”

In Miller’s opinion, however, it is the view from the Adirondack chairs overlooking Greenport Harbor that can’t be beat.

“It is the best view in all of Greenport,” she said. “It was the reason we bought the house in the first place.”

Harbor Knoll Inn is located at 424 Fourth Street in Greenport.
