Boasting a private beach, kayak rentals, meticulously manicured gardens and a visiting masseuse, Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast in Southold offers all of the right ingredients for the perfect weekend getaway.

Shorecrest has been operating as a North Fork bed and breakfast for 30 years and has been owned by England native Marilyn Marks for the past 10 years.

“In terms of offering the private beach and access to the Long Island Sound and Bay, there isn’t any other bed and breakfast like it,” she said.

The house was originally built as a summer getaway for a wealthy New Jersey doctor in 1897 and Marks kept the 19th century charm with her vintage-influenced style.

The B&B has five guest rooms, each with attached private bathrooms, central air conditioning, flat screen TVs, premium cable and Wifi.

Marks also offers beach houses for rent for longer vacations. The Shorecrest Beach House is right across the street from the bed and breakfast, in front of the private beach, and down the road is the Southold Inlet House. There are also four other rentals available.

Breakfast begins at 9 a.m. and is normally four courses. Fresh ground coffee, tea, cider and hot chocolate are made available to guests along with fresh muffins or bread. The main meal includes fresh fruit, English muffins, a choice of breads, a cooked dish and fresh juice.

Examples of a homemade cooked dish are Dutch pancakes stuffed with chocolate and bananas or a Frittata with fresh tomatoes, basil and Italian cheeses.

For time spent outdoors, there is private access to the bay where guests can launch kayaks. The private beach is conveniently across the street, complete with beach chairs on the shore. Marks studied horticulture and landscape design at the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx and there are plenty of comfortable places to lounge and admire her work at Shorecrest.

Guests can also spend time in the sitting room, the library or on the screened porch. Marks said many guests enjoy borrowing books from her large collection to read in one of these spots.
