Looking for a way to teach your kids about the ocean? Or would you like a relaxing evening cruise around the Sound as the sun sets? Either way, the tall ship Soundwaters will have you covered in Greenport’s harbor.

Soundwaters will be back in Greenport on Aug. 22, 23 and 24 at the railroad dock, offering separate educational family trips and sunset sails for adults over three days.

The 80-foot schooner will dock next Friday and offer an evening cruise that night for adults from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, the Tall Ship will open up two cruises daily: an afternoon cruise for families to learn about the ocean from 2 to 4 p.m., as well as repeats of the sunset cruise.

Lynn Summers, who volunteers as director of the East End Seaport Museum‘s educational programs, said the family cruises gives kids an opportunity to get up close and personal with marine life.

The ship has several stations on board to teach kids about sailing, as well as the importance of preserving our oceans.

“It’s the most hands on that these kid will get on a sailing vessel,” she said. “You go to stations to talk about ecology, biology, the moon the stars and how you navigate.”

In addition to the paid trips, the schooner will hold a free sail for 40 local children and adults from nearby community groups like Community Action Southold Town.

“It’s a win-win for everybody,” Ms. Summers said.

Adult tickets for the sails cost $35, while children’s tickets for kids between 5 and 12 years old cost $25. Reservations for Soundwaters’ sails can be made online.
