Tour the lush hidden landscapes of two private North Fork gardens and benefit a good cause.

The Garden Conservancy, which works to preserve beautiful gardens for public enjoyment, is hosting an “open day” on the North Fork when two local gardens will open their doors to visitors.

The event is July 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dennis Schrader and Bill Smith’s Mattituck home and at Milford Garden in Southold.

Admission to each garden is $5 and all proceeds benefit The Garden Conservancy. No reservations are required and the event is rain or shine.

Dotted with lily ponds, rustic arbors and stone terraces, the two-acre Mattituck garden surrounds a restored 1840’s farmhouse. Schrader is co-author of the book “Hot Plants for Cool Climates, Gardening with Tropical Plants in Temperate Zones” and a new book titled “Extraordinary Leaves” with photographer Steven Green-Armytage.

Also available for viewing is the pond, herb and vegetable gardens of Milford Garden in Southold.

The Garden Conservancy hosts similar events in cities like Portland, Ore., Chicago and Martha’s Vineyard.

The Mattituck garden is located at 1200 East Mill Road. Directions to the Southold garden can be obtained either during the visit to the Dennis Schrader and Bill Smith garden or by calling 1-888-842-2442.
