The North Fork is taking Manhattan.
Out of the hundreds of New York State-based produces of wines, beers, spirits or foods, Southold’s own One Woman Wines & Vineyards was awarded a bid to manage the first “Taste NY” shop in Grand Central Terminal. “It is a big opportunity for us,” said Gabriella Purita, the vineyard’s business manger and daughter of wine maker Claudia Purita. “In the city we really want to have people understand that you can walk out your door and down the street and there is someone producing amazing food and beverages right there. You name it, we make it in New York.”
One Woman Wines & Vineyards was awarded the bid from the Metropolitan Transit Authority earlier this week after a competitive process that began last October.
“One Woman’s Wines & Vineyards’ proposal aligns itself with the existing quality level of shopping and dining choices already offered in the terminal and Taste NY’s mission to promote New York’s agricultural and farm-based foods,” said the MTA’s director of Grand Central Terminal development, Nancy Marshall.
The 460-square-foot storefront is slated to undergo renovations in early summer, prior to its grand opening in August, said Ms. Purita, who will be in charged with operating the NYC store for the vineyard.
In addition to selling several North Fork-produced good, other products will include beer and spirits such as Brooklyn Brewery and Hudson Baby Bourbon, and products from statewide food purveyors such as McLure’s and Baldwin Hill.
The Taste NY store is a part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s tourism promotion program that focuses on expanding New York’s food and beverage industry while bolstering agribusiness across the state.
The store is the latest step meeting that goal, he said in a statement Wednesday.
“As many as 750,000 people travel through Grand Central every day, which makes it the perfect venue to highlight New York’s world class food and wine to new customers,” Mr. Cuomo said. “Showcasing New York’s best food and wine in this iconic and widely utilized transit hub will help to boost business for our local producers, and ultimately grow tourism and economic activity in communities throughout the state.”
The shop will be located on the west side of the terminal, adjacent to the Biltmore Room across from Track 37.
