shelter island fair

Shelter Island will be an island of fun tomorrow Saturday, August 24. At the Center firehouse, located on Route 114 in the heart of town, the Shelter Island Fire Department will host a Country Fair between noon and 3 p.m. There will be something for everyone — a pig roast, turkey, sausage and peppers, kielbasa, as well as hot dogs and burgers with all the accompaniments. Kids can enjoy the bounce house, try their luck at games and take a tour of the firehouse and the firetrucks. There will be music by Joe Lauro’s band and a food raffle sponsored by Schmidt’s Market.

Just down the street at the Shelter Island School, the Shelter Island Chamber of Commerce presents its 50th annual Art Show and Crafts Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This show of fine arts and quality crafts has nearly 100 artisans, including young artists, who will exhibit and sell their original work. In addition to ceramics, paintings, artisanal foods, photographs, hand-carved duck decoys, jewelry and much more, there will be a Shelter Island section with plenty of Island-themed gifts.

Across from the crafts fair, the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church will hold its Lemonade and Goodies Stand in the church parking lot starting at 10 a.m. and continuing throughout the day until everything is sold. Buy homemade cookies, brownies, breads, ice cold lemonade and home-brewed iced tea and support the restoration of the Community Hand Bell Choir, “Island’s Presby Bells.”

The Shelter Island Library will also host their Summer Book Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pick up some great used books at discount prices, including beach reads.

So come join in the fun as we celebrate summer on Shelter Island.
